Dr. Got Advice on Avoiding Yard Work Injuries

If you haven’t already, you’re probably going to start getting outside and getting your yard into shape following the long winter. When you do, you’ll want to avoid some common injuries that happen during yard work.

According to University Orthopedics’ hand surgeon Dr. Christopher Got, one of the most common injuries are children getting injured while taking a ride on the mower with an adult. They get off while the mower is still running, resulting in devastating injuries. While it’s best to keep children off these machines all together, if you do let the littles hitch a ride, you’ll want to make sure it’s off before letting them on or off.

Dr. Got also urged people to take care while using hedge clippers, wood chippers or any other equipment, which can easily cut nerves and tendons in your hand.

He also advises wearing heavy gloves to protect your hands from splinters and blisters. If you do get wounds on your hands, be sure to keep it clean and dry to avoid infection.
