Filling a Critical Gap: UOI’s Exam Clinic for Student-Athletes Helps Ease Strain on Primary Care Amid Statewide Shortage

For many Rhode Island families, back-to-school season means juggling class schedules, supply shopping—and a scramble to book last-minute sports physicals. With a growing shortage of primary care appointments across the state, these critical pre-participation exams can be difficult to schedule in time for fall sports.

To help fill that gap and ensure student-athletes get the green light to play, University Orthopedics once again opened its doors for its annual Free Fall Sports Pre-Participation Exam Clinic.

Held on Saturday, August 2, at our flagship Kettle Point location in East Providence, this year’s clinic welcomed 158 student-athletes from across the region. The comprehensive physical exams were provided completely free of charge, continuing a tradition more than 25 years in the making.

“By offering free sports pre‑participation exams to 158 student‑athletes, we not only ensure safe returns to play but also help ease the demand on primary care clinics, urgent care centers, and emergency departments,” said Dr. Stephen Marcaccio, Orthopedic Sports Medicine Surgeon and event volunteer. “It’s a way for us to support both families and the greater healthcare system during a very busy time.”

Supporting Families—and the Healthcare System

What may seem like a small act—offering a free physical—actually relieves a significant burden. August typically brings a spike in demand for school-related health appointments, putting strain on primary care offices already stretched thin.

By stepping in to provide physicals for hundreds of student-athletes over the years, University Orthopedics not only helps families meet school requirements, but also gives local providers some much-needed breathing room.

“An event of this size is only possible thanks to the teamwork and dedication of our physicians, advanced practice providers, and skilled therapists,” said Terry Moreno Toste, Physical Therapist and program coordinator. “Being a student-athlete takes incredible commitment—from both the athletes and their families—and it’s our mission to help them start their seasons strong.”
