University Orthopedics Expands World-Class Care in Massachusetts as OCPN Partnership Becomes Official

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 1, 2021) — An exciting partnership between Rhode Island-based University Orthopedics (UOI) and Massachusetts-based Orthopedic Care Physician Network (OCPN) became official today, creating one of Southern New England’s largest and most comprehensive orthopedic care organizations.

As a result of the partnership, University Orthopedics now has 13 locations across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The practice consists of nearly 650 employees including more than 60 physicians, 45 advanced practice providers, 50 therapists, and numerous residents and fellows.

“Just like the doctors and staff at OCPN, our mission at University Orthopedics is to provide the highest quality orthopedic care integrated with world-class education and research. because our goals are so closely aligned, this partnership just made sense,” said Edward Akelman, M.D., President of University Orthopedics. “OCPN is already a high-performing organization and together we are confident that we will continue to do great things in Massachusetts.”

OCPN’s Simon M. Cornelissen shared Dr. Akelman’s sentiments.

“As one the largest independent orthopedic groups in the country,  University Orthopedics will continue to provide the world-class, cutting-edge, compassionate care the people of Rhode Island and Massachusetts have come to expect,” Cornelissen said. 

With locations conveniently situated throughout Southeastern Massachusetts, OCPN already has deep roots in the community. UOI hopes these additional locations will enhance its partnership with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.
