University Orthopedics Expands Pain Medicine Team with Addition of Fellowship-Trained Physician Woo Jin Lee, MD

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 19, 2022) University Orthopedics, one of the region’s largest, most comprehensive orthopedic practices, is thrilled to announce it will now offer pain management services in the southwestern part of Rhode Island with the addition of Dr. Woo Jin Lee, board-certified in anesthesiology and fellowship-trained in pain medicine.

“We believe patients shouldn’t have to travel far to receive the care they need. With the addition of Dr. Lee, University Orthopedics stays true to its mission of providing comprehensive, cutting-edge care that’s not only world-class but also convenient,” said Edward Akelman, M.D., President of University Orthopedics. “Dr. Lee will see patients primarily at our Westerly office, ensuring our patients in that part of the state have enhanced access to exemplary pain intervention treatments much closer to home.”

Dr. Lee treats all types of pain, specializing primarily in spinal conditions like degenerative disc disease/spondylosis, spinal canal stenosis, radiculopathy, facet joint arthropathy, sacroiliac joint arthropathy, vertebrogenic/compression fractures, and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). He also treats major peripheral joint pain, including hip, shoulder, and knee arthropathy. He offers a variety of interventional treatment options, including epidural steroid injection, radiofrequency nerve ablation, joint steroid injection, peripheral nerve blocks, sympathetic plexus blocks, spinal cord stimulation, and vertebral augmentation.

“Pain, especially chronic pain, can be absolutely debilitating, taking an unimaginable toll on a person’s mental and physical health. Managing it appropriately is vital to improving the quality of life of my patients. The treatment modalities I provide allow patients with different types of pain, such as musculoskeletal, inflammatory, neuropathic, sympathetic, cancer, and/or visceral, to be adequately treated,” Dr. Lee said. “I am excited to join University Orthopedics and thrilled my patients will access to such a renowned group of surgeons, physicians, therapists, and other medical experts who all work together to provide comprehensive care that’s second to none.”

Dr. Lee completed a fellowship in pain medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Prior to that, he completed his anesthesiology residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He earned his medical degree at George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. In addition to seeing patients at University Orthopedics’ Westerly location, Dr. Lee will also perform procedures and surgeries in various locations including Westerly Hospital, UOI’s East Bay Surgery Center in East Providence, and the practice’s East Greenwich office.
