Rivals on the Field, United in Care: University Orthopedics at the Governor’s Cup

Every fall, the Governor’s Cup brings together two of Rhode Island’s most storied football programs — Brown University and the University of Rhode Island — in a fierce battle for state bragging rights. But behind the competition, another kind of teamwork is happening on the sidelines.

At the heart of that effort are two University Orthopedics physicians:
Dr. Michael Hulstyn, head team physician for Brown University, and Dr. Ramin Tabaddor, head team physician for the University of Rhode Island.

Though their teams compete, their mission is the same — to keep student-athletes healthy, safe, and performing at their best.

More Than a Rivalry

The Governor’s Cup is a showcase of athletic excellence and school pride, but for Dr. Hulstyn and Dr. Tabaddor, it’s also a reminder of the shared purpose that transcends competition.

“Game day is the culmination of weeks of preparation,” says Dr. Hulstyn. “Our job is to make sure players are physically ready — hydrated, fueled, and protected from preventable injuries — so they can perform safely.”

Across the field, Dr. Tabaddor echoes that same commitment. “When an athlete goes down, there’s no team rivalry — just the urgency to make sure they’re cared for properly,” he says. “At the end of the day, we’re all working toward the same goal: getting them healthy and back in the game.”

Preparation Meets Passion

In the days leading up to the Governor’s Cup, University Orthopedics’ medical teams ensure every detail is covered — from emergency response protocols and athletic training coordination to on-site injury evaluation and triage. On game day, the doctors work side by side with trainers and staff, constantly monitoring player health and readiness.

“Every athlete deserves expert care,” says Dr. Hulstyn. “Whether it’s at Brown or URI, we’re proud to provide that level of support.”

Proud Partners in Athlete Health

As the crowd roars and the lights shine on the field, few fans see the quiet, coordinated efforts happening behind the scenes. Yet, it’s that teamwork — between doctors, trainers, and staff — that helps make moments of victory possible.

For University Orthopedics, the Governor’s Cup is more than a football rivalry; it’s a celebration of excellence, collaboration, and care.
Because no matter the uniform or the scoreboard, the mission remains the same: keeping Rhode Island’s athletes healthy, strong, and in the game.
