University Orthopedics Celebrates OrthoDirect Location in East Greenwich with Ribbon Cutting

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (February 18, 2021) — University Orthopedics celebrated its new OrthoDirect location in East Greenwich with a ribbon-cutting Wednesday afternoon.

OrthoDirect opened its new location at 1598 South County Trail, which is the same building as UOI’s East Greenwich offices and just down the road from its previous West Warwick location.

“By relocating OrthoDirect into UOI’s state-of-the-art building, we’re better able to provide our patients with world-class, comprehensive care in one convenient location,” said Dr. Edward Akelman, president of University Orthopedics.

Town and business leaders, including Town Manager Andrew Nota and East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Stephen M. Lombardi, joined OrthoDirect staff for the ceremony.

“The East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce welcomes OrthoDirect to our East Greenwich community.  We love the concept, and we are excited that you chose East Greenwich for your new location,” Lombardi said.

OrthoDirect at University Orthopedics offers same-day and next-day appointments and is staffed by clinicians trained in orthopedics and sports medicine. X-ray services are available on-site to expedite injury assessment. The physicians are fellowship-trained, board-certified, and hold certificates of added qualification in sports medicine. The providers specialize in both operative and non-operative treatments, while UOI surgeons specialize in the arthroscopic repair of sports-related injuries, complex shoulder and knee reconstruction, shoulder instability, and advanced cartilage procedures.

“We understand that injuries, especially sports-related injuries, happen when you least expect it and at often at inconvenient times,” Akelman said. “Our physicians understand the impact an injury may have on an athlete and the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment.”

While not intended for serious or chronic conditions, OrthoDirect treats patients with orthopedic concerns resulting from:

  • Acute sports-related injuries
  • Shoulder, knee, and ankle injuries
  • Any musculoskeletal injury

OrthoDirect hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call (401) 443-4100 to schedule an appointment.
