University Orthopedics spine surgeon Dr. Christopher McDonald has earned two prestigious national honors recognizing his contributions to the field of spine care.
Dr. McDonald has been named to SpineLine’s 2026 “20 Under 40” class and elected a Distinguished Fellow of the North American Spine Society (NASS). He will be recognized for both honors at the NASS Annual Meeting in October.
Recognized as an Emerging Leader in Spine Care
SpineLine, the official publication of NASS, selected Dr. McDonald as one of its 20 Under 40 honorees for 2026.
Launched in 2018, the program recognizes emerging leaders whose innovation, service, leadership, scholarship, and dedication are helping shape the future of spine care. Honorees are selected by the SpineLine Editorial Board through a competitive process that considers professional accomplishments as well as service to NASS and their communities.
Dr. McDonald, an orthopedic spine surgeon with the Center for Spine Health at University Orthopedics, was one of just 20 spine professionals from across the country selected for the 2026 class.
Distinguished Fellow of NASS
Dr. McDonald was also elected to the 2026 class of Distinguished Fellows of the North American Spine Society, recognizing his commitment to the specialty and contributions to the organization.
A NASS member since 2020, Dr. McDonald credits the organization with playing an important role throughout his career, from introducing him to mentors and educational opportunities as a trainee to providing opportunities for research, collaboration, mentorship, advocacy, and professional development.
In his Distinguished Fellow profile, Dr. McDonald also reflected on one of the most important lessons he has learned as a physician: technical excellence is only part of providing exceptional care. Empathy, communication, and trust are equally important.
“Taking the time to listen, educate, and connect with patients has helped me build stronger relationships and provide better care throughout my career,” he told NASS.
His recognition comes at a time of rapid technological advancement in spine surgery. Dr. McDonald noted that emerging tools such as surgical planning technology, navigation, robotics, and artificial intelligence have tremendous potential, while emphasizing the importance of ensuring that surgeons maintain the fundamental skills and judgment necessary to provide excellent care with or without those technologies.
The two national honors recognize Dr. McDonald’s work as a surgeon, educator, researcher, and emerging leader in the field of spine care.
Fellowship-trained in both spine surgery and trauma surgery, Dr. Christopher McDonald specializes in the comprehensive treatment of spinal disorders across all ages, offering both advanced surgical solutions and conservative treatment options tailored to each patient’s unique needs. From addressing straightforward conditions to performing the most complex spine revisions, Dr. McDonald employs minimally invasive and motion-preserving techniques whenever possible, ensuring the highest standard of care.
