University Orthopedics’ Dr. James Maher Honored with RIATA’s Frank Murgo Service Award

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 14, 2020) — University Orthopedics is thrilled to announce Dr. James O. Maher III has been recognized for his work with athletes and athletic trainers in the community.

The Rhode Island Athletic Trainers’ Association – the professional membership association for certified athletic trainers who support the athletic training profession in the state of Rhode Island – recently awarded Dr. Maher with the Frank Murgo Service Award in honor of Maher’s educational efforts and dedicated service to athletes and athletic trainers.

“At University Orthopedics, we pride ourselves on not only providing world-class orthopedic care but also on being an engaged member of our community. So to see one of our doctors honored in such a way truly instills pride for all of us,” said Edward Akelman, M.D., President of University Orthopedics.

The award is named in honor of the late Frank Murgo, a longtime teacher, coach, and trainer at Barrington High School.

“Frank Murgo was a legend in the local sports world and a true pillar of the community. I am honored and humbled to be selected as the recipient of an award which bears the name of this very special man,” Dr. Maher said.

Dr. Maher is board-certified in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. He specializes in the treatment of student, recreational, and professional athletes. His comprehensive approach to treatment includes medication, activity modification, physical therapy, or surgery when necessary.
